Troubleshooting Your Dish Network Receiver

It has happened to all of us. It's fourth and ten with just 1:42 to go in the second half - and of course your team is down. The weather outside is getting worse and worse. Suddenly, the image on your TV looks eerily like the snow falling outside your window. It is a race against the game clock to get picture back on your TV before you have to resign and just look for the score on the evening news.

Remember, only on a rare occasion will you lose picture with Dish Network - when you do, more often than not, there is nothing wrong with your equipment or the service. This article discusses some of the easiest and fastest ways to troubleshoot your Dish Network receiver. From High in the Sky to Your Dish Network Receiver

Dish Network uploads programming to its satellites via gigantic transmission stations on earth. The digital image travels upward through the atmosphere where it eventually finds satellites orbiting the Earth miles above the United States. Those satellites capture and resend the digital signal in such a way that nearly everyone with a plain view of the sky can receive it. The signal is collected by the ubiquitous mini-dishes and sent through cables to your Dish Network receiver, which is set up to decode and convert the digital signal to a viewable picture. That viewable picture is transferred to your brand-new, 56 inch widescreen plasma TV, where only moments ago you were watching the second half of your favorite team's football game. The Game Plan

Troubleshooting Your Dish Network Receiver

If you suddenly lose picture on your TV, the problem could be in any one of six places - but before you panic, let me tell you you're only going to have to check four of them. The Dish - If something interferes with the signal getting from the satellite down to your dish the picture is obviously going to suffer. If the signal is completely blocked, your picture will disappear. Make sure that there is nothing between your dish and where your dish is pointing in the sky. This could include: a tree branch, your motor home, your neighbor's motor home, a build-up of snow, ice, or excessive water on the dish, or anything else you could possibly imagine. Luckily, the solution is simple. Get the signal flowing freely back to your Dish Network receiver by removing the obstruction. Of course, if the obstruction is your neighbor's prize winning oak tree, be judicious as you contemplate ways of removing it (i.e. talk to her about it and figure out a solution together). If it is ice or snow just wipe the dish clean, and you'll be back to your game before they even snap the ball. The Cables and Connections - The wiring and connecting pieces that carry the signal from the dish to your Dish Network receiver could also be part of the problem. It is unlikely that the image will suddenly cut out on you, especially in the fourth quarter, if the wiring is bad. The easiest way to test this is to ensure that the integrity of the cables is still intact and that all of the connections are tight. If you are still not getting picture to your television, try plugging the cables into another TV, or routing the picture through your VCR. If you still have no football game, try using different cables. If the picture comes back at any time while you are doing this, you've honed in on where the problem is and you can go about fixing it... after the game, of course. Your Dish Network Receiver - On a very rare occasion, your receiver may stop receiving or decoding the signal properly. To fix this, simply unplug the receiver for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. (Don't worry - 1:42 can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes at the end of a football game.) You can also try taking the programming card out of the receiver and then putting it back in again. Both of these steps help reset the receiver, and it should start functioning properly again as soon as you turn it back on. Your New Plasma TV - I'm no expert on troubleshooting TVs that cost more than my car, but checking the cables and connections is never a bad thing. A word of advice from one who has been there and done that - make sure the back of your huge, heavy television is readily accessible. The only thing that will make you more angry than missing the miracle comeback of your favorite team in that game you are missing, is dropping that massive television on your toes as your were breaking your back moving it out from the wall.

The good news is your team came back from behind and won. The better news is you read this article and were able to watch it live. The best news is you kept your cool and because your wife was so impressed with the way you handled the whole situation, she bought you a pool table.

Linksys WMB54G Vista Setup - How to Configure Wireless Music Bridge to Work With Your Computer

Streaming music from your computer speakers wirelessly via wi-fi sounds like a great idea and it is but if you purchased a Linksys WMB54G and tried setting it up on your Vista machine, chances are you gave up and threw the device out the window. Thanks to Google and some trial and error, I figured out how to get this "non-Vista" device working on a Vista computer.

It's amazing to me that Linksys didn't make this device Vista compatible but I am not here to write about that. Instead, I will show you step by step how to get this wireless music bridge to work on your computer.

1. Throw the CD that came with the unit out! If you happen to run the software on your computer, you will have more problems than you can image.

Linksys WMB54G Vista Setup - How to Configure Wireless Music Bridge to Work With Your Computer

IMPORTANT - The utility program is registry heavy so if you installed the old version that came on the CD, you will most likely have issues even if you UN-install it and install the new version. I had to do a system restore and restored my system prior to installing the original utility program.

2. Go to Linksys Drivers and download

XP, Vista Setup Wizard (XP and Vista) Ver.2.18

XP, Vista Firmware (XP and Vista) Ver.2.18

3. Connect the wireless music bridge directly into the Ethernet port of your computer - NOT into your router (you will loose Internet connection unless you are using wireless so print this page in case you need to come back to these directions.

4. Run the firmware program - it's pretty self explanatory - make sure the device is plugged into the wall and your computer and do not interrupt the process. The new firmware version should be 2.18

5. Once the firmware is upgraded, run the installation program by double clicking on the "setup" file.

6. Click where it says "Click here to start" - this will detect the bridge connected to your Ethernet port. Once connected, you can add a password, change the name and set it up to be seen on your wireless network.

*If you use WPA or WPA2 security in your network, it is the equivalent to PSK and PSK-2 in the Linksys setup so just be aware that you will not see anything about WPA

7. Once the device is all configured, it will ask you to install the utility which is the program that runs on your computer that sends the audio to the device. Follow the on screen prompts and install the utility. You will probably get an error after installing the utility because it will not run on Vista as is - just close the error message and continue.

8. After everything is installed, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer.

HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART TO GET IT WORKING IN VISTA

9. Click on Start and type in "msconfig" where it says "start search".

10. Click on the startup tab and find "CMflywave Application" - uncheck the box to the left of it and click OK.

11. Find these three files on your hard drive:

cmas2ds.exe

cmflywav.exe

wmb54g.exe

(look for them inside the linksys install folder in program files)

12. Right-click on each of these files and go to properties - Then find the compatibility tab and check the box where it says "Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select (Windows XP Service Pack 2) and then click OK.

13. Now, double click on these 3 files in this order:

cmas2ds.exe

cmflywav.exe

wmb54g.exe

The utility should now run successfully in Vista. Click on "Scan for music bridge" and your device will show up in the list. Click on the device and click "connect" and now all your audio will be sent to the bridge.

....................................................................................................................................

So a few days went by and all of a sudden, the music was not being transferred to the wireless bridge. I do not know if I reboot or what but now whether the bridge showed as connected or not, the music was just coming out of the computer speakers.

What I did then was go to my sound settings and right click on the active device for the computer speakers - I then disabled them.

Next I reboot the computer and when it came back up, I verified that the computer speakers were disabled. I then went to the Linksys folder and double clicked on cmflywav.exe and wmb54g.exe (NOT cmas2ds.exe)

The bridge was able to connect and the music transferred.

In conclusion, this device was more headache than it was worth. I paid with shipping for a refurbished model and all the hours wasted trying to get it to work were not worth the money I saved on the device. If you are not a tech savvy person, this device is NOT for you. Linksys needs to get on the ball and resolve all the software issues with the WMB54G.

Network Design and Proof of Concept Testing

Overview

All design changes you make to your network must be tested with a proof of concept plan. It is important to test the current design, configuration and IOS versions in a non-production environment or on the production network with limited disruption. Implementation of newer network modules at a router, for instance, could require that you change the current IOS version that is implemented. Making those changes could affect WAN or campus modules already installed at production routers. That is the real value of doing a proof of concept and certifying that the new equipment and IOS versions integrate with each device as well as the network.

Advantages

Network Design and Proof of Concept Testing

The following list describes the advantages of doing a proof of concept with your network design. The proof of concept test results should be examined and used to modify current infrastructure, security and management specifications before generating a design proposal. The proof of concept model suggested here involves prototype design, equipment provisioning, defining tests, building equipment scripts and examining test results.

The following list describes specific advantages associated with proof of concept testing

• Address any design concerns without affecting your production network

• Build and test configuration scripts before implementation

• Test new IOS, Cat OS and WAN OS versions and firmware

• Sell design feasibility to the client

Proof of Concept Model

The following numbered list describes all proof of concept components and specific sequence.

1. Prototype Design

2. Provision Equipment

3. Define Tests

4. Build Equipment Scripts

5. Review Test Results

Prototype Design

The prototype is a model for testing design and configuration features in a non-production setting such as a lab. You concern could be with specific protocols or IOS services and how they work with current protocols and IOS services running on your production network. The design should specify topology, equipment, addressing and software versions.

Provision Equipment

Obtain the circuits, cables, devices and servers required for testing. The equipment and software should be identical to the proposed design for specific testing and verification. Connect the equipment as specified with the prototype and make note of specific software versions and firmware being tested.

Define Tests

The tests should be designed to verify the design works as described at all Layers of the OSI model. That would focus on physical, network and application connectivity. The following is a suggested list that should be modified for your particular concerns. Depending on the current network and your tests, it could be an option to implement testing at some access offices with minimal impact on the production network.

The following is a list of typical tests that should be conducted

• Ping Equipment and Servers

• Routing and Switching

• Security Testing

• Availability Testing

• Application Load Testing

Build Equipment Scripts

Work with vendors to build the correct scripts for each device. This is particularly relevant if the design will utilize newer equipment and protocols that have yet to be standardized with the industry. Discuss any problems or concerns the vendor has with your current design and, if necessary, modify scripts and design specifics

Review Test Results

The proof of concept test results should discuss specific issues with all defined tests. Note what problems were resolved and those that were referred to a vendor. The test results should be utilized to make changes to the current infrastructure, security and management specifications developed so far before moving on to the design proposal.

Fox Network Television History

The Fox Network television history has not all been plain sailing. It was launched in October 1986 after the parent company of 20th Century Fox, TCF Holdings, sold 50% of its shares to News Corporation for 0 million in 1985. New Corporation then bought six television stations in various major cities from Metromedia. At this time, the stations that they bought were broadcastings to just 22% of households in the United States. Once they started broadcasting as Fox in 1986 there were reaching 80%. This however, was not enough to be considered alongside the other three main networks of ABC, CBS and NBC who were reaching over 97%. Fox was still in its infancy at this point and although it had many plans in the pipeline it was only broadcasting one show - The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers.

The network was seen to have a young and slightly irreverent outlook in its programming and was soon broadcasting shows such as 'Married... with Children' and 'The Tracey Ullman Show'. It was not long before 'The Simpsons' was born and this went on to be the longest running animated series and situation comedy in the history of U.S. television. Fox Network television history was being made.

'America's Most Wanted' was the next big success story in Fox Network television history and was the first show to make it into the top 50 shows of the week in the all important Nielson ratings. The show is still among the prime time hits. Although Fox was well on its way to being recognised as a top network broadcaster, its ranking with the other big three was still elusive.

Fox Network Television History

This all changed in 1993 when Fox gained the National Football League coverage contract. Until then this had been the rights of CBS, where it had found its home since the 1950s. After just one season of the NFL coverage, Fox had to be considered alongside CBS, ABC and NBC... the big three had become the big four. Around the same time, Fox started to broadcast some soap operas aimed at the younger audience and these were popular from the outset. Shows such as 'Beverly Hills 90210' and 'Melrose Place' were an important part of the Fox network but even they were beaten on viewing figures by 'The X-Files'. This was the networks entrance ticket to the Top 25 in the Nielson rating schedule.

Since then, Fox Network television history has given us such shows as 'Family Guy', 'King of the Hill' and many reality shows such as 'Joe Millionaire'. Such shows are not popular with everyone and some have knocked the network for broadcasting distasteful viewing. However, the finale of the first series of 'Joe Millionaire' was watched by over 40 million people. The figures speak for themselves. Fox has always been an entertainment channel. It has never faired well with news reporting but has found its own niche where it entertains and brightens up the lives of millions of viewers throughout the United States.

A Child Care Center Marketing Plan

One of the leading factors that will contribute to your success or failure when you start a child care center is marketing. In order to win customers and grow into a larger business with more than one facility or just to maintain your existing group sizes you need a solid marketing strategy in place.

Here is an outline of a child care center business plan to guide you.

Identifying a Hungry Market

A Child Care Center Marketing Plan

The first step in putting a child care center marketing plan together is to identify your market. This may seem obvious at first but there are many niches or sectors in this industry. These range from infant care, regular child care for preschoolers, after school care, weekend and evening care. The niches vary by the age of the children, location, what time the children are there and also increasingly by the quality and style of care, facilities and educational program.

The most successful operators identify a niche that is not being catered to sufficiently in their local area and they move into and dominate the market. Doing extensive market research for your childcare business and working on differentiating yourself from competitors are the keys here.

Packaging and Pricing Child Care Services

Once you have defined your niche you can then look at clearly defining the services that you offer to meet niche demands and you can look at ways of packaging your services in a way that appears to enhance their value. While still being flexible in what you offer you can put together attractive packages with catchy names such as 'Saturday Koala Club' for example. List what is included with each package and offer discounts for customers signing up for a full package (clients who prepay for every Saturday for three months in advance get 10% discount for example).

It is also important to do research into child care pricing so that you can come up with rates that make your business marketable.

Branding

By now you should have a fair idea about the child care brand that you will be establishing. Give some thought to thinking about how you want the public to perceive your business and note down a company philosophy and the values that you want to project to the community. Then you can meet with a graphic designer and start discussing how to visually represent the brand that you want to create with a logo design.

Child care Center Advertising and Promotion

The next step is to get word out about your new child care center and the services and packages that you offer. Advertising is an important part of any marketing plan and you should look at the many options available and start running some campaigns several months before opening for business.

Networking and Cross Promotions

Advertising is not the only way to go about attracting clients. You should look at ways of cross promoting your services with other local business and network in your local community to meet a wide range of people.

Don't write off working together with competitors to cross promote each other's services respectively. If you get an enquiry and find out that the child in question would be better suited to a program at another daycare then you are doing the parents a favor by letting them know. And if the other daycare center is also referring children that they feel are more suited to what you have to offer then this arrangement is a win win for all involved.

Word of Mouth Marketing

If you serve your existing customers well they will refer friends to you. This kind of 'word of mouth' advertising is free and can be fully exploited by giving your clients every reason to talk about you to their friends. Providing a great service is one thing but there are many other ways to get customers talking about you. Make their interaction with your business so unique, interesting and memorable that they can't wait to bring your center up in a conversation with their friends.

Refining a Sales Process

If your advertising and networking efforts are successful you should start to receive a good number of enquiries from families. At this point you need to have developed an effective sales process right through from making the appointment, the interview session, a tour, some soft selling and then closure of the deal.

Don't Stop Marketing to your Customers

Keep marketing to your existing customers even after they have signed up with your service. There are always additional products and services that you can sell to maximize the revenue that you make off each client.

Many small centers spend too much time focusing on the day-to-day work of running their business and neglect their marketing. To make your child care business a success you need to ensure that you, as the owner, or another trusted staff member can devote a large part of their day towards marketing. This will ultimately help to determine how successful and profitable your business will be.
