What is Network Security? Simplified Definition

First of all, what is a network?

The network we refer to here is the computer network, which has so many definitions from too many sources whether on the internet or elsewhere. Simply put, a network is the inter-connection of cables and other communications media, connectivity equipment such as switches and routers, electronic devices such as computers, printers, scanners, plotters, etc., for the purpose of sharing data and resources.

Whoa! Now, that doesn't sound simple at all, does it? Alright, let's give it a second try...

What is Network Security? Simplified Definition

A Network is the inter-connection of communications media, connectivity equipment, and electronic devices for the purpose of sharing data and resources.

Now, that wasn't too hard, was it? And here's the second question...

What is Security?

This one is easy, as the word security means safety or safekeeping, protection or well-being.

So simply put, Network Security refers to any undertaking designed to protect the network.

Why do we have to protect or "Secure" the network?

We need to protect the network because there are constant threats against the "resources" we share in the network. These could be valuable information or data about our employees and clients, or more importantly about our products or businesses. Most of these threats come in the form of:

* Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses
* Spyware and adware
* Zero-day attacks, also called zero-hour attacks
* Hacker attacks
* Denial of service attacks
* Data interception and theft
* Identity theft

In order for us to fully understand what "Network Security Solution" is all about, we must also understand how Network Security works. Because there are a variety of threats, there is no single solution. We need multiple layers of security, so that if one fails, the attacker would have to deal with the next layer.

Network Security Systems are usually composed of many components of both software and hardware which are designed to work together to improve security and minimize maintenance. The software must be relentlessly updated to prevent from new threats.

These components include:
* Anti-virus and anti-spyware
* Firewall, to block unauthorized access to your network
* Intrusion prevention systems (IPS), to detect and block attacks
* Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), to provide secure remote access

Network+ Exam Tutorial: Network Interface Cards (NICs)

Part of the challenge of passing the Network+ exam is learning about all the different types of hardware a network requires. Today we'll take a look at a vital part of network connectivity, the Network Interface Card (NIC, pronounced "nick").

The NIC is the device, or card, that gives the host a physical connection to the network. The NIC is generally an internal device, but one that can be removed and replaced with a different NIC. NICs are considered Physical layer devices and work at Layer 1 of the OSI model.

Most issues involving NICs occur before the device is even added to the network - because the purchaser didn't do their research. All NICs are not created equal. Some are for Ethernet networks, some for Token Ring, and speed capabilities vary as well. Don't assume a given vendor's NIC is going to fit your device and give you the results you want. A quick visit to the vendor's website and a few minutes looking up NIC specifications can save you a lot of trouble later on.

Network+ Exam Tutorial: Network Interface Cards (NICs)

One more NIC warning - take your time when you're installing a new NIC. Make sure the device is off, and make sure you're properly grounded by connecting the grounding strap to your wrist. Otherwise, you can send static electricity into places on the host where it's only going to cause damage.

Your new NIC should also come with directions on how to download the drivers for that NIC. Drivers sound like something physical, but they're not. Drivers are simply software files that are needed on the host in order for the NIC to work correctly. Vendors used to include drivers on CDs with their NICs, but the trend now is to include instructions on where to download the drivers from the vendor website.

That does lend itself to an occasional Catch-22: "If I don't have this device on the Net yet, how can I download the drivers?" If the host has no network connectivity, you may need to download the drivers to a host that does, copy the files to CD, and then install the drivers from CD.

You'll see two different lights on a typical NIC, one green and one amber. Depending on whether the host has network connectivity or not, the lights will be solid, flashing, or out. Sometimes flashing is good, sometimes it's not! Here's a guide to the colors you'll see on a NIC:

A solid green light indicates connectivity is present. This link light is generally either green or off. Green is good, off is not! That light should stay a solid green. If you see it flashing green, that's a sign of intermittent connectivity, which is a fancy way of saying "one minute the PC is on the network, the next minute it's not". Most likely, either the NIC or the cable connected to the NIC is going bad. With the green light, flashing is not desirable.

Flashing amber lights indicate collisions. You'll see this flash occasionally even on a healthy network, but you don't want to see it flash so often that it looks like a solid amber light!

If you have an Internet connection at home, you can see these lights in action for yourself. The green and amber lights will be right next to where the cable from your modem connects to your PC.

On occasion, you'll have a PC that loses connectivity to the network. I advise you to always start network troubleshooting at the Physical layer of the OSI model, and that means checking both the NIC and the cable connected to it. I personally would swap the cable out first, since they seem to go bad more often than NICs, but that's up to you. If you swap NICs and you still can't get the PC on the network, try putting a new cable in.

Network Administrator - Duties and Functions

Many organisations use a three tier support staff solution, with tier one (help desk) personnel handling the initial calls, tier 2 (technicians and PC support analysts) and tier three (network administrators). Most of those organisations follow a fixed staffing ratio, and being a network administrator is either the top job, or next to top job, within the technical support department.

Network administrators are responsible for making sure computer hardware and the network infrastructure itself is maintained properly for an IT organisation. They are deeply involved in the procurement of new hardware (does it meet existing standardisation requirements? Does it do the job required?) rolling out new software installs, maintaining the disk images for new computer installs (usually by having a standardised OS and application install), making sure that licenses are paid for and up to date for software that need it, maintaining the standards for server installations and applications, and monitoring the performance of the network, checking for security breaches, poor data management practices and more.

Most network administrator positions require a breadth of technical knowledge and the ability to learn the ins and outs of new networking and server software packages quickly. While designing and architecting a network is usually the job of a network engineer, many organisations roll that function into a network administrator position as well; day to day and month to month "Is it up?" jobs fall on the shoulders of the network administrators.

Network Administrator - Duties and Functions

One of the chief jobs of a network administrator is connectivity; the cry "The networks down" usually means the network admin has to be hip deep in something fixing it and post haste. They are in charge of making sure connectivity works for all users in their organisation, and making sure data security is handled properly for connections to the outside internet. (For network administrators doing security aspects, this can be a full time job in and of itself.)

Trouble tickets work their way through the help desk, then through analyst level support, before hitting the network administrator level; as a result, in their day-to-day operations, they should not be dealing directly with end users as a routine function. Most of their jobs should be on scheduling and implementing routine maintenance tasks, updating disaster prevention programs, making sure that network backups are run and doing test restores to make sure that those restores are sound.

Other jobs that fall on the network administrator's tasks include fighting for the IT budget and setting standardised installs packages up so that all end user desktops are identical. While the network administrator probably isn't doing the installs on new computers, he is likely to be the one in charge of setting up what gets installed, and setting user access policies, as well as evaluating the purchase of new equipment to replace older gear that has been deployed. Similar decisions are made regarding software packages (both for end user support and server levels) and networking hardware.

Network administrators are jokingly referred to as the highest level of techie you get before you get turned into a pointy haired boss and made into management.

Network Topologies - Advantages and Disadvantages of Implementing Them

BUS TOPOLOGY

The bus (sometimes known as the backbone) topology arranges all computers, printer, and server in a straight line. Each device connects and transmits through one main coaxial cable made from insulated copper wire. Through this cable, data is transmitted from the source device attached to the cable to a destination device which is also attached to the cable.

There are a couple of disadvantages in using the bus topology. One disadvantage is that if the main cable malfunctions, the entire network goes down which results in the difficult, time-consuming task of locating the source of the malfunction and repairing the problem. A second disadvantage is congestion of data during transmission better known as "bottlenecking."

Network Topologies - Advantages and Disadvantages of Implementing Them

In spite of the disadvantages of implementing a bus topology, there are advantages to the bus configuration. The fact of being relatively inexpensive and the simplicity of adding new devices are the main reasons that a bus topology is the most widely used topology configuration in the business environment.

RING TOPOLOGY

The ring topology arranges all computers, printers and server in a typical circle. Each device connects to two other devices in the network, either a computer, printer, or server. A ring configuration allows direct data transmission from one service on the ring to its neighboring devices. There are some disadvantages to implementing a ring topology which include the fact that this type of configuration is rather expensive, and usually quite difficult to install.

The advantage of using a ring topology is that if a device fails, a network administrator or specialized network hardware can proceed to re-route all the data to other devices within the ring, bypassing the failed device, without interruption.

STAR TOPOLOGY

The star topology arranges all computers, printers, and server in a star configuration. Data transmission from one device to another is completed through the use of a specialized device known as a hub. The purpose of the hub is to route data from a source device, through the hub, and on to the desired destination device.

The main disadvantage of the use of the star topology is that if the hub malfunctions, the entire network is down. While this may seem like a major disadvantage, malfunctions do not pose much of a problem. Finding the source of the malfunction is performed easier and more rapidly than when using the Bus or Ring configurations. The hub can also bottleneck during transmission of data between devices.

There are advantages to using the star configuration which include the ease of the star topology installation and updating process because of all devices being directly connected to the hub. In the star configuration the direct connection to the hub allows for easy reconfiguration of the hub when installing new devices; therefore, the results are no need for additional wiring.

Novel Netware Network Operating System

This is an operating system that has the capabilities of supporting information and resources sharing between network computers. It provides an influence between workstation in a network.

Network Operating System Services includes:

File and resource sharing - Is the fundamental requirement for a network i.e. is the reason behind networking computers.

Novel Netware Network Operating System

Configurability and usability - configuration and use should be easy paper documentation, electronic format, books should be provided for a first time user to get the network up and running.

Support - any kind of useful information should always be available.

Types of Network Operating System:

Novel Netware
• It is the first NOS to support the multiple platforms
• It was the first NOS to support multiple and varying topologies and routes between this different topologies
• Novel Netware servers typically outperform other network servers because it is by design network operating system

Features of Novel NOS include:

• Novel directory services (NOS)

NDS offering is what makes a novel a strong competitor of Windows NT. It uses X.500 standard and therefore prevent the creation of duplicated objects. Each object has a distinguish name (DN). Because NDS directory services is displayed in neat graphically arranged order, objects such as users, printers, workstations and application servers are sharing an organize structure to the system administration user. You can log in as the administrator user from any workstation. This enables you to manage the entire directory tree. You can add and remove user's services and other network resources. Users need to log only once in order to gain access to all network resources.

• Security Services

All passwords flows back and forth from the Netware server to the client workstation in an encrypted format, even the administrator cannot look at user's password on the server. The administrator can remove and add users permission but only the users know their own password, even if users get to physical Netware server, they have no greater access to resources that would have on their own workstation is build into the network system because Netware security is build into the Netware system of the lowest level. All attempts to access information or resources on the network go through on the network security system.

• Database services

Provide a central repository for information on the server, the major database management system available is
Netware C - a database record management system index with a database key for easy development for vertical application.

Netware SQL - standard used for accessing records stored in relational database system.
Oracle DBMS - it is SQL based system used by mainly business critical application in different lines of business.

• Messaging services

Provide a messaging service called Netware message handling service. This provides ease of message, transmission between many fronted applications. This application can share data over the LANs and Novel word.

• Print services

Allows up to 16 printers to be shared per print server on the Network and therefore a real flexibility of printing, Printers need not to be attached to the actual print server in order to be operated.

• Netware loadable machine (NLM)

Netware loadable modules are maintained by Novel Netware operation. It provide the power needed to support hierarchy used network services in the server. have the same access to the Netware security services making them same to control and monitor.

Advantages of the Novel Netware
Has the print and file server software in the business and its sharing of files and printers that makes a network important and useful. Has the best LAN NOS directory service.

Disadvantages
As an application server its fails as Windows NT beats it on this case. Poor at printing data/information network status and management. It has build in network management tools that are not powerful.

10 Top Network Marketing Products

The best network marketing products have a few things in common.

First, there are plenty of items to go around. An original oil, no matter how beautiful, just doesn't qualify here. A quality giclee reproduction does count.

Second, there is solid profit in it. You can either make a lot of money from a few sales, or a little money from a lot of sales. But a little money from few sales doesn't work.

10 Top Network Marketing Products

Third, these are marketing products that you have access to. There may be a great audio program on your topic that you know you could make a lot of money on, but if you can't become an affiliate it doesn't do you any good.

And most importantly, it must be a product that reflects your website topic. Selling vitamins on a site for jalopy owners really makes you seem desperate. No matter how desperate you really are, don't admit it. Stick with on-topic products and you will do better over the long run. Your online business needs to reflect the same quality as a brick and mortar store would have, if not more.

Even those four qualifiers immediately disqualify about 98% of the products out there for most sites. So, what's left? Well, here are our choices for the ten Best Network Marketing Products:

1. Natural products. Everything natural had its real hey day back in the 1960s. Surprisingly, there is a new surge in natural stuff. Natural cosmetics, natural clothing, natural vitamins, natural food. Everything.

2. Cosmetics. Speaking of cosmetics, women seem to have an insatiable appetite for looking beautiful. Choose a topic and a product that is a specialized niche, like mineral make up, and your sales will be much stronger than if you generalize for all types of makeup.

3. Vitamins and age-defying products. The world is getting older. No one likes to look older, or feel older. There is a big market for products that can rejuvenate and provide a barrier against aging.

4. Retirement options. Yep. All those people need places to live. They need products that make their lives easier and ensure their mobility. Even tours designed for retired people are a good option - 70 and 80 year old don't usually move as rapidly as teenagers, and they appreciate a bit slower paced travel event.

5. Parties. Kids parties. Retirement parties. Birthday parties. Quincineras. Bar and bat mitzvahs. All kinds of parties need decorations, ideas, and all kinds of network marketing products.

6. Designer clothing for large women. People are becoming super sized. Women in particular, no matter what their age, like to look sharp. Present great options for stylish attire. This is definitely a top network marketing product idea.

7. Children's clothing and toys. There are soon going to be lots more grandparents than grandchildren. That means that lots of grandparents are going to lavish their grandkids with lovely toys, clothing and goodies.

8. Auto accessories. Guys still have more love affairs with cars than with ladies. I don't even know the names of all the doodads they put on their cars, but there are lots of them. And there is lots of money to be made with these top network marketing products.

9. Movies. We are all still replacing our old videos with the new CD format, so there are millions and millions of movies yet to be sold. Pick your topic, and get a great selection for your clients to buy.

10. Self improvement products. The market for gaining self-confidence and friends and jobs has never waned. This has been a top network marketing product area for many years, and will likely be so for many more years to come.

Don't see your favorite among these top network marketing products? Not to worry. There's lots of room for your creative ideas as well.

Ethics In The Workplace

Workplace Ethics is a subject that we have all heard of. In fact, the subject of Ethics in general is something that most people are familiar with. And, what is commonly understood about ethics is there are ethics and then there are workplace ethics. What most people don't realize, however, is that there is no such thing as workplace ethics; ethics are the same, (or, should be) whether in the workplace or in personal life.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

Ethics are about making choices that may not always feel good or seem like they benefit you but are the "right" choices to make. They are the choices that are examples of "model citizens" and examples of the golden rules. We've all heard the golden rules: Don't hurt, don't steal, don't lie, or one of the most famous: "Do unto others as you would have done to you." These are not just catchy phrases; these are words of wisdom that any productive member of society should strive to live by.

Ethics In The Workplace

In our personal lives, most people try to do exactly that. Ethics are thought of by many people as something that is related to the private side of life and not to the business side. In many businesses, having ethics is frowned upon or thought of as a negative subject. This is because business is usually about doing what's best for number one, not about what's really the right thing to do. You probably are already feeling uneasy just reading this.

A GOOD EXAMPLE

Take ENRON, for example. Were the actions of ENRON's CEO's a good example of ethics? No. But, what they WERE was a CLASSIC example of was two things: One, those actions displayed how ethics were not used in any way. Two, their actions painted a grim and realistic picture of what can happen when ethics are neglected. Had ethics been considered in the first place by the leaders of the company, there would have been no scandal. If ethics were used on a daily basis in every company, there would never be scandals.

Martha Stewart comes to mind when speaking of ethics. Again, there is a feeling of uneasiness when dealing with this topic. But, why is it like that? Ethics are supposed to improve our lives and invoke good feelings. Perhaps the reason ethics is such a sore subject is because they are so often poorly used, if used at all.

A NEW WAY

Ethics are making a comeback. To begin with, more and more corporations and businessmen and woman are now realizing that ethics aren't checked at the door when entering the workplace. Ethics have every bit as much a place in the public as they do the private. How is it there should be separate sets of ethics, depending upon whether it is your personal life or your work life? The answer is that there shouldn't be a separate set and in light of recent events that we see on our television sets as of late, more and more companies are realizing this fact.

Some companies are incorporating ethics into their training. It is s subject that can go hand-in-hand with business and when employees and CEO's alike understand what ethics are about, business can improve. Not only will the community take note of the ethical nature of a business but also so will customers.

Periodic reevaluations are suggested in ethics training as well, since times change many things that some would never consider ethical or non-ethical. For instance, when the first computer hacker to send a work into a university computer system crippled the entire network that the system was a part of, including that of public utilities - simply because he could do it - a question of ethics is hard to pose. Computers were new, at the time. And, no one had ever been able to do such a thing before. With new times comes new technology and new ways of doing things. Ethics will still play a part of it all and refreshing ethics training only re-strengthens what has already been learned, when new ages come about.

In the end, it's all about what a person understands about ethics. Many university curriculums are now heavily applying the teaching of Ethics and for good reason. Young minds will take this information into the workforce and understand that ethics need to be applied there as well as in the private sector. Corporations will be able to avoid embarrassing scandals that are presented all over national news. Small business will be able to keep and attract more clients and customers. Negotiations between businesses could be accomplished with more consideration for the other company in mind, which would only help both.

Above all, a high level of ethics in your business should be in place at least for the customers. If anything, it is the customer that should be considered the most when it comes to ethical business practices. In the long run, a company will reap great profits from a customer base that feels it is being treated fairly and truthfully.

192.168.2.1 in Your Private Network

The internet is a collection of networks linked together to form a huge data pool where computers or nodes collect and send data. Information exchange works when a data packet is being sent out of a private network to a public network, after layers of networks, finally reaching the recipient's private network where data is being read.

From an end user's view, the router purchased is going to be used as a public network gateway that routes data packets from the internet to users in that particular private network. A good network router will have network security features such as Network Address Translation (NAT) to modify a data's address source so that a sender's address is not revealed to unauthorized viewers. This IP address of 192.168.2.1 can be found as a default hardware access page for Belkin or SMC routers, where settings for NAT can be found here.

Visiting 192.168.2.1 in your browser will display a protected webpage stored in the router's memory. This web page is where you will be able to access the features of that particular router. Say for instance, a Belkin all-in-one Wireless Access Point cum ADSL modem will have a list of features such as wireless security settings, NAT settings, DHCP settings, ADSL dialup settings and other network related settings. All the main features of that router can be found by simply accessing the password protected webpage found on the IP address of 192.168.2.1.

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol in a router is used to enable automatic IP assignment to computers logged on to the network. As default the router's IP address is 192.168.2.1, it is not advised to set a computer with a static IP address of 192.168.2.1. Doing so will result in an IP clash, where information exchanging will not be complete. It will be better if the user enable the DHCP feature in the router so that other computers will not be having 192.168.2.1 as their IP address and keeping their assigned IP addresses within the 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 range which is a private network block.
